Saint Abraham the Recluse of Edessa
Recluse and priest
Edessa and Beth-Kidina
Feast day: October 29

A life of faith
Abraham lived as a recluse near Edessa before accepting a priestly mission at Beth-Kidina. Despite repeated hostility, he continued teaching until the community received baptism. He later cared for his orphaned niece Mary. When she left, he searched for her and encouraged her gently to return, without rebuking her.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Abraham’s care for Mary invites a response to another person’s despair that offers mercy without humiliation.
