Saint Agnes of Rome
Virgin martyr
Rome · early 4th century
Feast day: January 21

A life of faith
Agnes grew up in a Christian family in Rome and dedicated her life to God while still very young. Her traditional life describes pressure to marry and attempts to force her to abandon the Christian faith. She refused, prayed for help, and is remembered as a martyr. Christians preserved her memory at the burial place outside Rome, where a church was later built in her honor. Agnes’s witness gives dignity to a young person’s conscience. The Church honors her faithful courage in the face of coercion, remembering her as a person whose devotion could not be bought or forced.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Respect the conscience and dignity of a vulnerable person. Offer support that does not demand control, and ask for courage to resist pressure when a good commitment is threatened.
