Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne
Bishop and missionary
Northumbria · 7th century
Feast day: August 31

A life of faith
Aidan was a monk of Iona before being sent to Northumbria as a missionary bishop. He argued that a failed mission required gentler teaching rather than blame directed at the people who had not understood. King Oswald provided Lindisfarne for his episcopal center and sometimes interpreted his preaching. Aidan traveled among the people, established communities, and distributed gifts to those in need. The received life remembers him giving away even a royal horse to a poor man. His mission joined clear teaching with patience, simplicity, and a willingness to let possessions serve another person’s immediate needs.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
