Saint Alexander Baltaga of Bessarabia
Priest and martyr
Lozova, Călărași and Kazan
Feast day: August 8

A life of faith
Alexander Baltaga was born at Lozova and served as a priest at Călărași. With colleagues he helped reopen a diocesan printing press and publish material for Romanian-speaking Christians. During Soviet repression he sent his family to safety but remained with his parish. He was imprisoned and deported to Kazan, where he died in 1941.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Alexander’s work invites reflection on making Christian teaching accessible in the language people use at home.
