A life of faith

Alexander Hotovitzky began priestly service in North America, where he helped establish parishes, edited a bilingual church publication, and supported mutual aid. His work included the building of Saint Nicholas Cathedral in New York. After service in Finland he moved to Moscow, assisting the Church through revolution and persecution. He helped gather relief for starving people and defended fellow clergy during trials. Arrests, imprisonment, and exile repeatedly interrupted his ministry. The OCA life preserves his final arrest and the Church’s remembrance of his martyrdom. His witness combines pastoral initiative with loyalty and mercy under pressure.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider how shared resources can protect both worship and human dignity. Offer help to a trusted relief effort, and speak carefully on behalf of someone treated unfairly.
