A life of faith

Alexis Toth was a teacher and Eastern Catholic priest before coming to Minneapolis to serve an immigrant parish. Conflict over his ministry led him and his parishioners to seek reception into the Orthodox Church. He subsequently traveled, preached, and wrote to help other communities understand Orthodox faith. Material hardship forced him to work outside parish ministry for a time, yet he continued giving to people in need. The OCA life emphasizes forgiveness and his warnings against intolerance toward other Christians. His commemoration remembers conviction expressed through education, perseverance, and pastoral care for immigrant families.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Combine conviction with respect. Explain a belief patiently and avoid treating disagreement as permission to insult another person or community.
