Saint Amfilohie of Pângărați
Monk and abbot
Moldavia · 15th–16th centuries
Feast day: September 7

A life of faith
Amfilohie began monastic life at Moldovița and later came to Pângărați, where the community chose him as spiritual father. He led the monastery for many years and was remembered by a contemporary as an able writer and patient spiritual worker. A new stone church replaced the burned wooden church during his leadership. Before retiring to Moldovița, he counselled his disciples and appointed a successor. He later received the schema name Enoh.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Amfilohie’s example invites long-term responsibility and a thoughtful handover when another person must continue your work.
