Saint Amphian the Martyr
Martyr
Eastern Roman Empire
Feast day: April 2

A life of faith
Amphian and his brother Aedesius learned Christian faith from the martyr Pamphilus. The official calendar records Amphian’s public confession of Christ before the governor Urban. He suffered torture and was killed by being thrown into the sea. His remembrance preserves a personal witness distinct from the later sufferings of his brother.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Amphian’s example invites courage in holding to a considered conviction when pressure makes silence easier.
