Saint Anastasius the Persian
Monk and martyr
Persia, Jerusalem and Caesarea in Palestine
Feast day: January 22

A life of faith
Anastasius was born Magundat and served in the Persian army. Questions about the Christian veneration of the Cross led him to study Scripture and Christian teaching. He left military service, received baptism in Jerusalem and became a monk. Later he spoke about his faith among Persian soldiers at Caesarea. Arrest and persecution followed, and he was killed.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Anastasius invites reflection on pursuing difficult questions through study rather than leaving them unexplored.
