A life of faith

Andrei Șaguna was born Anastasie in Miskolc and studied philosophy, law and theology before entering monastic life at Hopovo. He taught in a seminary and served church communities before becoming bishop in Transylvania and later Archbishop of Sibiu and Metropolitan of Transylvania. His work extended into classrooms, printing and the practical organization of church life. He reorganized the theological school at Sibiu to train both priests and teachers, founded schools and initiated literacy courses in parishes. He established a diocesan press that produced textbooks, church books and a new Bible edition. Scholarships supported young people pursuing further education. His church statute included lay participation in administrative and financial matters. Although he hoped to build a cathedral in Sibiu, the received life says he could not gather the funds to begin. He died in 1873 and is commemorated on November 30.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Andrei joined teaching to practical support for learners. Consider whether a book, a lesson or help with a study expense could make learning more accessible to someone.
