Saint Andrew the First-Called
Apostle & martyr
Galilee & Eastern Mediterranean · 1st century
Feast day: November 30

A life of faith
Andrew was a fisherman from Bethsaida and a disciple of John the Baptist before following Jesus. John’s Gospel remembers him bringing his brother Peter to the Lord. Orthodox tradition honors him as the First-Called and describes journeys through the eastern Mediterranean before his martyrdom at Patras. His life combines a personal response to Christ with a desire to bring others into the same encounter. Andrew’s example is especially meaningful for those whose service happens through introductions, encouragement, and steady witness. A small invitation can become important even when the person offering it never occupies the center of attention.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Think of someone you could welcome into a conversation or parish visit without pressure. Follow Andrew’s example through a generous invitation that leaves the other person free to respond.
