Saint Ansgar of Hamburg-Bremen
Bishop and missionary
Corbie, Hamburg, Bremen and Scandinavia · 9th century
Feast day: February 3

A life of faith
Ansgar was educated at Corbie and taught at the monastery of Corvey before undertaking missions to Denmark and Sweden. His work faced repeated setbacks, including the destruction of Hamburg. He continued serving as a bishop and supporting Christian communities. Rimbert, his companion and biographer, remembers his generosity to poor people, a hospital at Bremen, and efforts to free captives. Ansgar challenged Christians in his own diocese who had enslaved people seeking refuge. He died in 865. His missions were a beginning, rather than the complete conversion of Scandinavia.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Care includes people who are easy to overlook. Ansgar’s example invites practical generosity and the courage to challenge mistreatment.
