Saint Arsenius I of Serbia
Archbishop
Zhicha and Peć, Serbia
Feast day: October 28

A life of faith
Arsenius was born in Srem and became a monk at Zhicha under Saint Sava. He later served as abbot and succeeded Sava as archbishop. During a time of invasion, Sava sent him to find a safer place for the episcopal community. Arsenius selected Peć and established a monastery and church there. His life links monastic formation with responsibility for the safety and worship of a community. A conflicting chronology in the consulted source is omitted here.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Arsenius looked for a safer home for a church community. Consider how thoughtful planning can protect people and support their worship.
