Saint Artemius the Great Martyr
Military official and martyr
Alexandria and Antioch
Feast day: October 20

A life of faith
Artemius held military authority at Alexandria before being called to Antioch under Julian. Seeing Christians being tortured, he challenged the emperor’s treatment of them. He lost his position and was tortured. The calendar remembers his continued confession and martyrdom.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Artemius recalls the responsibility of people with authority to speak when others are being harmed.
