Saint Astion of Halmyris
Monk and martyr
Halmyris, Dobrogea
Feast day: July 8

A life of faith
Astion sought Christian instruction from the priest Epictet and asked to become a catechumen. After baptism, he accompanied his teacher to Halmyris in Dobrogea. The calendar describes his prayers for people in distress and his instruction of a new believer. Arrested with Epictet, Astion remained faithful under torture and prayed before his execution.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Astion’s example invites you to seek instruction seriously and allow what you learn to shape how you respond to others.
