Saint Athanasius the Athonite
Monastic founder
Trebizond, Constantinople and Mount Athos
Feast day: July 5

A life of faith
Athanasius grew up at Trebizond and studied in Constantinople, where he later taught. He became a monk under Michael Maleinos before settling on Mount Athos. With support from the emperor Nikephoros and the emperor’s brother Leo, he established a monastery dedicated to the Mother of God, with buildings for the monastic community. He died when a wall collapsed during construction.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Athanasius connects learning with the practical work of building a community.
