Saint Athanasius Patelarie
Patriarch
Crete, Thessaloniki, Constantinople, Galați and Lubny
Feast day: May 2

A life of faith
Athanasius was born in Crete and entered monastic life before serving as metropolitan of Thessaloniki and, for short periods, patriarch of Constantinople. He translated the Psalter into popular Greek while teaching in Wallachia. He sought support for indebted churches and distributed gifts among monasteries. Before his death at Lubny in 1654, he prayed for his persecutors and forgave them.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Athanasius connects learning with practical care for communities under pressure.
