Saint Augustine of Hippo
Bishop and writer
North Africa · 4th–5th centuries
Feast day: June 15

A life of faith
Augustine came from Thagaste in North Africa and received education at Carthage before teaching rhetoric in Italy. In Milan, Ambrose helped him approach Scripture, and his encounter with Christian faith brought a decisive change of life. After baptism he returned to a life of religious commitment and eventually became bishop of Hippo. His ministry included extensive preaching and writing amid theological disputes. The Confessions and The City of God remain among his best-known works. The OCA life emphasizes his wish to communicate clearly, placing the understanding of his hearers above the pursuit of polished language.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Let learning make you more honest about your own life. Explain one important idea simply, with greater concern for another person’s understanding than for appearing impressive.
