Saint Bacchus the Martyr
Military official and martyr
Syria · early Christian period
Feast day: October 7

A life of faith
Bacchus served as a senior military official alongside Sergius. Their Christian faith became known when they refused an order to sacrifice. They lost their rank and were led publicly in chains before being sent to Syria for punishment. Bacchus died from the beating imposed there, while Sergius faced further suffering afterward. His own witness is remembered together with his companion’s.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Bacchus’s example invites steadfastness that does not depend on position or public approval.
