A life of faith

Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles and is remembered for carrying the Gospel beyond Galilee. His traditional life describes missionary work with Philip and Mariamne, hardship in Asia Minor, and later preaching in Armenia and other lands. The OCA account emphasizes his refusal of a king’s gifts because he sought people’s salvation rather than payment. He continued confessing Christ under persecution and is honored as a martyr. Bartholomew’s example invites a generous understanding of service: the purpose of helping another person is that person’s good, rather than reward or influence for the helper.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Offer help without making the recipient responsible for your sense of importance. Ask for generosity that leaves another person freer, stronger, and more able to receive good things.
