Saint Basil the Baker of Peć
Martyr and baker
Peć and Ćuška
Feast day: May 12 (Gregorian); April 29 (Julian)

A life of faith
Basil was a married baker and father in Peć during Ottoman rule. His received life describes the abduction of his daughter and his attempt to bring her home. When the abductors seized him and demanded that he abandon Christianity, he refused. Fatally wounded near Peć, he reached the village of Ćuška, where he died. Local Christians buried him there, and his grave became a place of remembrance and prayer.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Concern for a loved one deserves practical support. When a family faces coercion, seek trusted help and protect the safety of everyone involved.
