A life of faith

Boisil was a monk and priest at Old Melrose and a teacher of Cuthbert. Bede’s Life of Cuthbert describes him welcoming the young Cuthbert and asking Abbot Eata to admit him to the community. Boisil guided him in monastic life and taught in neighbouring villages. When Boisil was near death during an epidemic, he and Cuthbert read the Gospel of John together over seven days, seeking a faith expressed in love. Cuthbert later succeeded him as prior. The name Boswell also preserves his memory.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Learning can be an act of care. Read a passage with someone, listen to their questions, and give time to understanding it together.
