Saint Boris-Michael of Bulgaria
Ruler & enlightener
Bulgaria · 9th–10th centuries
Feast day: May 2

A life of faith
Boris ruled Bulgaria during a period of war, hardship, and significant religious change. Encounters with Christians, including members of his own family, helped prepare his conversion. At baptism he received the name Michael. His later rule supported the development of the Bulgarian Church, the building of churches, and closer participation in the Christian life of the region. In old age he entered a monastery, though political crises drew him back into public action. He died in 907. His commemoration remembers the role of a ruler in a nation’s Christian formation and the later turn toward monastic devotion.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how a position of influence can support learning and worship. Exercise responsibility with care, and respect another person’s freedom when speaking about faith.
