Saint Brigid of Kildare
Venerable abbess
Ireland · 5th–6th centuries
Feast day: February 1

A life of faith
Brigid is remembered for generosity from her youth, sharing food and clothing with people in poverty. She received monastic tonsure and established a community at Kildare, whose name recalls the church of the oak. The Church honors her as an abbess and a formative figure in women’s monastic life in Ireland. Her traditional life contains many stories of compassion and prayer, and devotion to her continued across different lands. Brigid’s example makes care visible in everyday resources. A home, a meal, a piece of clothing, or a community’s welcome can become an expression of faith.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Look for something ordinary you can share today. Offer food, time, or useful help with attention to the recipient’s needs, allowing generosity to become a regular practice.
