A life of faith

Bucolus is remembered as a disciple of John the Theologian and the first Bishop of Smyrna. The Church honors his work of teaching, baptizing new believers, and guiding the community in its confession of faith. Before his peaceful death, he entrusted the flock to Polycarp, who continued that pastoral care. Bucolus’s brief surviving life gives particular weight to the handing on of responsibility. A faithful teacher prepares others to continue the work, so that the community’s life does not depend only on one person’s presence or reputation.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider a responsibility someone else may need to continue. Share useful knowledge patiently, encourage a trustworthy coworker, and prepare the task in a way that helps the community endure.
