Saint Callistus I of Constantinople
Patriarch
Mount Athos, Constantinople and Tenedos
Feast day: June 20

A life of faith
Callistus learned monastic life on Mount Athos under Gregory of Sinai and wrote his teacher’s life. He became patriarch of Constantinople in 1350, later withdrew to a monastery he had founded on Tenedos, and returned to the patriarchate. He died in Serbia in 1363 while serving on an imperial embassy.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Callistus recalls the value of preserving the life and teaching of a spiritual guide.
