A life of faith

Cassiani, also known as Kassia, was a Byzantine poet, composer, and abbess associated with a convent on Constantinople's Xerolophos hill. She directed the community while continuing literary and musical work. Her hymns were first sung by the nuns and later entered the Church's wider worship. The best-known composition attributed to her gives voice to a repentant woman approaching Christ and is sung during Holy Week. The OCA remembers her combination of theological reflection, poetry, and music. Her life shows intellectual and artistic work taking place within a women's monastic community, with lasting influence on the words through which Orthodox Christians pray.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider a creative skill that could serve shared worship or understanding. Cassiani's example connects artistry and theological thought with responsibility for a living community.
