Saint Cecilia of Rome
Martyr
Rome
Feast day: November 22

A life of faith
Cecilia came from a prosperous Roman family and became Christian after hearing the Gospel. She wished to dedicate her life to Christ, but her parents arranged her marriage to Valerian. The Romanian calendar recalls that she continued praying beneath the outward display of costly clothes. She is commemorated as a virgin martyr.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Cecilia’s prayer beneath outward display invites attention to the inner life that other people may not see.
