Saint Chad of Lichfield
Bishop and teacher
Northumbria and Mercia · 7th century
Feast day: March 2

A life of faith
Chad trained at Lindisfarne and in Ireland before succeeding his brother Cedd at Lastingham. As a bishop, he travelled among settlements to teach the Gospel. When Theodore of Canterbury challenged his appointment at York, Chad stepped aside. Theodore later entrusted him with the Mercian diocese, where he made Lichfield his center and established a church and monastic community. Between journeys he studied Scripture and prayed with a small group of disciples. The received account, drawing on Bede, remembers a teacher who combined pastoral travel with quiet study.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Make time both for learning and for people. Chad’s example encourages patient teaching and a willingness to accept correction.
