Saint Cleonicus of Amasea
Martyr
Amasea, Pontus
Feast day: March 3

A life of faith
Cleonicus was imprisoned at Amasea with Eutropius and Basiliscus following the martyrdom of Theodore the Recruit. Brought before the new governor, the companions refused demands to sacrifice to the gods. Cleonicus and Eutropius were crucified, while Basiliscus remained imprisoned until a later execution. The calendar commemorates Cleonicus and Eutropius together on March 3.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Cleonicus’s example invites steady conviction and solidarity with people facing the same trial.
