Saint Columba of Iona
Venerable abbot & enlightener
Ireland & Iona · 6th century
Feast day: June 9

A life of faith
Columba left Ireland with companions and settled on Iona, where their monastery became a center of Christian mission and worship. The monks traveled to other islands and inland communities, forming churches while maintaining ties with Ireland. The traditional life also remembers Columba’s work with manuscripts and his final counsel that the brethren love one another. Details of his earlier life remain uncertain, but the Church preserves his lasting influence as a teacher and abbot. His example joins a settled community of prayer with readiness to travel beyond familiar surroundings for the good of others.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
