A life of faith

Constantine’s reign changed the public circumstances of Christianity after centuries of persecution. He supported religious toleration for Christians, recalled exiles, helped build churches, and convened the Council of Nicaea in 325. His mother Helen also played an important role in the Church’s life. Baptized near the end of his life, Constantine died in 337. Orthodox Christians honor him as equal to the apostles because of his contribution to the spread and public protection of the faith. That honor invites reflection on the responsible use of influence; it does not make every imperial decision a model for imitation.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Think about the influence you have, however small. Use that influence to protect another person’s dignity and freedom, while remaining willing to examine your own motives and decisions.
