Saint Cosmas of Rome
Unmercenary physician & martyr
Rome · 3rd century
Feast day: July 1

A life of faith
Cosmas and his brother Damian were physicians in Rome who offered treatment without payment. Their kindness and Christian witness drew people to the Church and brought official scrutiny. When soldiers arrested neighbors in their place, the brothers surrendered and asked that those prisoners be released. The traditional life remembers their confession before the emperor and their eventual return to medical care. They later died through the violence of an envious teacher. Cosmas is honored with Damian as a martyr whose healing work was joined to responsibility for endangered neighbors.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
