A life of faith

Cuthburga was a sister of Ine of Wessex and was married to Aldfrith of Northumbria. The received account says the couple separated by mutual agreement and she entered the community at Barking, where Hildelith guided her. She later established the community at Wimborne with her sister Cwenburga and became its first abbess. The monastery became a center of women’s religious life and learning. The community’s work continued under later abbesses, and some of its nuns became missionaries abroad.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

A lasting community needs room for others to contribute. Help build something useful without expecting to direct every part of its future.
