A life of faith

Cuthman is remembered in Sussex as a shepherd who cared for his mother after his father’s death. The later account tells how, when poverty and disability made travel difficult, he built a wheeled bed to carry her. They journeyed east to Steyning, where he made a shelter for her and began building a church dedicated to Andrew. His exact birthplace and dates are uncertain. The parish preserves his story as a tradition of family care and practical work.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Care can require a practical invention rather than a grand gesture. Ask what would make a relative’s daily life easier, and share the work with others.
