A life of faith

Cyprian came from Carthage and was also known as Caecilius and Thascius. The priest Caecilianus helped prepare him for baptism. Cyprian later became a priest and then bishop of Carthage. Persecution brought a difficult pastoral question: how should the Church receive Christians who had abandoned the faith under pressure? The received life remembers Cyprian working with other bishops on a path of repentance and gradual reconciliation, with special provision for people close to death. During a later plague, he took part in charitable aid and mutual support. Further persecution led to exile. Attempts to draw him back to pagan worship failed, and he was condemned and executed near Carthage in 258. The Romanian calendar commemorates him on September 13, while the account dates his execution to September 14. His life joins theological and pastoral responsibility to practical care during a public crisis.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Cyprian’s care continued during a crisis that affected the wider community. Consider one practical form of help you can offer when fear or hardship makes people turn inward.
