A life of faith

Cyril began monastic life at Moscow's Simonov monastery, where he worked in the bakery and kitchen. He accepted his elder's instruction to eat with the brothers rather than pursue unusually severe fasting. After serving as abbot, he sought greater solitude near White Lake with Therapon. Other monks gathered, and Cyril organized a community marked by shared possessions and attentive worship. During famine he distributed bread to people in need. He also refused a village offered to the monastery because he feared the responsibilities of landholding would disturb its vocation. His final counsel emphasized love among the brothers, joining spiritual discipline to practical concern for others.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Consider whether a gift would help your community's purpose or distract from it. Cyril's example also asks how shared resources can serve neighbors during a time of need.
