Saint Cyril, Teacher of the Slavs
Equal to the Apostles
Thessaloniki, Moravia, and Rome
Feast day: February 14; May 11 with Methodius

A life of faith
Cyril, earlier named Constantine, was educated at Constantinople and worked as a librarian and teacher of philosophy before joining his brother Methodius in missionary work. Their best-known mission brought Christian teaching and worship to Slavic-speaking communities in Moravia. Together they developed a written form suited to the language and translated Scripture and service books, making the faith accessible without requiring another people's language. The OCA also remembers Cyril refusing gifts and requesting the release of captives instead. He later traveled to Rome and died there in 869. Before his death, he asked Methodius to continue their work among the Slavs.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Think about a barrier that prevents someone from understanding or joining worship. Cyril's work invites translation, patient explanation, and respect for the language people already speak.
