A life of faith

Damascene came from Gabrovo in Bulgaria and became a monk and priest at Hilandar on Mount Athos. While attending to monastery business in Svishtov, he sought repayment of money owed to the community. The received life relates that his debtors framed him with an accusation and brought him before a court. He refused to abandon Christianity and was executed in 1771. His memory is preserved in the Bulgarian Church and in the monastic tradition of Athos.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

When an accusation threatens someone, seek the facts and offer practical support without adding to the hostility.
