Saint Daniel of Pereslavl
Venerable Abbot
Borovsk and Pereslavl-Zalessky
Feast day: April 7

A life of faith
Daniel, whose earlier name was Demetrius, sought monastic formation under experienced teachers associated with Borovsk and Volokolamsk. After returning to Pereslavl, he gave particular attention to people neglected after death: poor people, those without relatives, and others whose bodies lacked anyone to arrange a burial. He buried them and established a monastery at the cemetery site. The OCA remembers this care as a concrete expression of love for his neighbors. His commemoration preserves the dignity of people easily forgotten by a community and the responsibility of providing care when no family can perform that work.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Remember someone whose dignity depends on care that brings little recognition. Daniel's burial work asks whether a community notices people who have no relatives to advocate for them.
