Saint Daniel the Prophet
Prophet
Babylon · 6th century BC
Feast day: December 17

A life of faith
Daniel was among the captives taken from Judah to Babylon. Educated for service at the royal court, he preserved his religious commitments while living under foreign rulers. The biblical account describes his restrained diet, interpretation of dreams, and prayer for his people. His intervention spared other wise men from execution when a king demanded an impossible answer. Later, his refusal to abandon prayer led to the lions’ den, from which God delivered him. Orthodox Christians remember his fidelity in exile and read his visions in the light of Christ. His companions’ ordeal in the furnace belongs to their own distinct story.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Keep a small, steady prayer practice when circumstances feel foreign. Let conviction lead to care for other people, including people who do not share your faith.
