Saint David of Thessaloniki
Venerable Monk
Thessaloniki
Feast day: June 26

A life of faith
David lived as a monk in Thessaloniki at a monastery dedicated to Theodore and Mercurius. The OCA remembers an unusual period of solitary prayer in an almond tree, influenced by the example of stylite ascetics. He also offered spiritual counsel to those who approached him. His commemoration preserves the memory of prayer and guidance within an early Byzantine monastic setting. Extraordinary austerities and miracle stories belong to the received life; they are not instructions for modern practice.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Make time for prayer that also leaves room to listen to others. David's remembered counsel accompanied solitude rather than requiring others to copy his unusual austerities.
