Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki
Great martyr & myrrh-gusher
Thessaloniki · early 4th century
Feast day: October 26

A life of faith
Demetrios is remembered as a Christian entrusted with public responsibility in Thessaloniki during a time of persecution. His traditional life describes an official who taught the faith openly instead of carrying out orders against Christians. Before his arrest, he instructed his servant to distribute his possessions to people in need. He met imprisonment with prayer and was killed for confessing Christ. Thessaloniki continues to honor him as a protector of the city. His story joins courage with generosity: the resources and authority placed in a person’s hands can become a means of service rather than personal security.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider where responsibility gives you a choice between convenience and conscience. Ask for courage to act honestly, while using your influence to protect and assist someone with less power.
