Saint Dorotheus of Gaza
Venerable abba & spiritual teacher
Palestine · 6th century
Feast day: June 5

A life of faith
Dorotheus entered monastic life after serious study and learned under experienced elders in the community of Abba Seridus. His responsibilities included welcoming travelers and serving in an infirmary. These duties brought him close to people with different burdens and needs. He later founded a monastery and wrote instructions remembered for clear expression and practical insight. His teaching joins humility with love for God and neighbor. Dorotheus’s example gives spiritual learning a daily test: understanding should appear in the way a person receives interruptions, cares for the sick, and treats coworkers with respect.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Notice an interruption that reveals another person’s need. Respond with one patient act of care, and ask what the encounter can teach you about humility and attention.
