A life of faith

Dositheus came from a prosperous family and entered monastic life after a visit to Jerusalem. Under the guidance of Dorotheus, he worked in the infirmary and cared for sick people. His training involved learning to restrain anger and to recognize the dignity of every patient. After several years, he became seriously ill himself and continued in prayer with the support of his elders. The Church remembers a short monastic life whose value was not measured by public achievement. Dositheus’s example gives holiness a practical setting in caregiving, patient correction, and the daily struggle to speak kindly.

The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.

A reflection

Notice your tone when someone’s needs become repetitive or inconvenient. Pause, speak gently, and offer the care you would hope to receive when your own strength is limited.
