Saint Elesbaan of Ethiopia
King and monk
Ethiopia · 6th century
Feast day: October 24

A life of faith
Elesbaan, also known as Kaleb Ella Asbeha, was king of Ethiopia. The received Orthodox life places his reign in the sixth century and recounts a military expedition to southern Arabia. He established churches in the region before returning to his kingdom. Later he relinquished the throne to his son and sent his crown to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. He entered an Ethiopian monastery and spent his remaining years in seclusion.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Elesbaan’s change of life invites reflection on which responsibilities to keep and which honors to release.
