Saint Elizabeth, Mother of John the Baptist
Righteous woman
Judea
Feast day: September 5

A life of faith
Elizabeth was the wife of the priest Zechariah and the mother of John the Baptist. Luke remembers the couple as faithful to God’s commandments. John was born when both parents were advanced in age. The Church’s tradition recounts that Elizabeth took the child into hiding when Herod sought his life.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Elizabeth’s remembrance invites attention to the families who shelter children during persecution.
