Saint Emilia of Caesarea
Righteous woman
Cappadocia · 4th century
Feast day: January 1; May 30 in Greek calendars

A life of faith
Emilia was the mother of a large Cappadocian family that included Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Macrina, and Peter of Sebaste. The OCA account of Macrina describes Emilia teaching her daughter through Scripture and the Psalms, prayer, and household responsibilities. After her husband’s death and the growth of her children, Emilia joined Macrina in a shared ascetic life. Their household servants were freed, and those who remained lived with the women in a community of common work and prayer. Her remembrance therefore includes both years of family formation and a later life that crossed established social divisions.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Treat teaching and household care as work worthy of attention. Share knowledge patiently, and examine whether everyday habits preserve unnecessary distance between people.
