Saint Emilian of Cyzicus
Bishop and confessor
Cyzicus · 9th century
Feast day: August 8

A life of faith
Emilian served as bishop of Cyzicus during the reign of Leo the Armenian. When the emperor’s policy opposed the holy icons, Emilian repeatedly faced pressure to abandon their veneration. He refused and suffered for his confession. The received account remembers his perseverance and his death in exile. His title Confessor recalls this steadfast defense of the Church’s worship.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Emilian remained steady through repeated pressure. Consider how to keep a commitment with patience rather than reacting in anger.
