Saint Ephraim of Novy Torg
Venerable Abbot
Hungary and Torzhok
Feast day: January 28

A life of faith
Ephraim came from Hungary and entered the service of Prince Boris with his brothers Moses and George. After Boris and George were killed, Ephraim left courtly service and withdrew beside the Tvertsa River. Other monks eventually settled near him, and he founded a monastery honoring the Passion-bearers Boris and Gleb. The brothers chose him as their leader. Near a road used by merchants traveling toward Novgorod, the community also provided free lodging for poor people and travelers. His life connects the memory of personal loss with a new place of worship and hospitality. He was buried in the monastery he had founded.
The Eastern Orthodox Church remembers saints in prayer and commemoration. Their lives offer examples for Christians learning to live their faith.
A reflection
Consider how a place or resource under your care could welcome a traveler or someone in need. Ephraim's foundation joined remembrance with practical hospitality.
